Watkins Hire Ltd supplied a 110 volt MH60 indirect fired heater complete with a FuelPAK 1000 litre bunded fuel tank on hire to provide construction site drying.

The Problem

The customer (a large construction and civil engineering company) contacted Watkins Hire Ltd to advise and quote on a building drying using warm dry air temporary heating system. The customer had undertaken the complete renovation of the historic Council buildings in Glasgow’s city centre; this included replacing the entire roof of the structure. Unfortunately this had left the building and in particular the top floors open to the elements, saturating the wooden framework of the infrastructure leaving it almost impossible for the next phase of the works to continue.

The Solution

During the free of charge site survey it became apparent due to the lack of available floor space within the fenced construction site that the equipment would have to be installed off the ground. However the construction company had erected a scaffolding system around the entire building to enable work to be undertaken on the outside of the edifice. During the initial meeting with the Site Engineer it was suggested that the only solution was to adapt and strengthen the flooring of a loading bay on the scaffolding at approximately 90m high, this would then allow us to site not only our KwikHEAT® MH60 indirect fired heater but also a fully laden FuelPAK® 1000 litre bunded fuel tank directly adjacent to the area which required drying. It was then simply a case of attaching 300mm diameter ducting from the duel outlet of our MH60 heater to deliver the warm air directly to where it was required.

“Watkins Hire Ltd are very adept at providing heating and drying solutions to the construction industry however when I arrived on site to carry out the survey it was obvious that this was going to be an interesting project. The size of the building was quite large but the area around the construction site was limited to say the least so to placing one of our heaters along with a fuel tank and possibly a generator at ground level just wasn’t feasible, the client enquired about our electric heater hire range that could possibly be placed inside the building but again this just would not be an option, as with most construction sites they simply did not have the power supply needed to run the amount of heaters required to aid drying out such an area. The loading bay was the ideal position to site the heater due to small physical footprint of both the KwikHEAT MH60 and the FuelPAK 1000 litre fuel tank, in fact the heater hire unit has taken up so little room the loading bay is still remained operational. The refilling of the fuel tank is a simple operation, they disconnect the FuelPAK 1000 using the quick release fittings lower the tank to the ground using the site crane refuel and return it to the loading bay. This is done approximately once a week as the MH60 only uses 6.98 litres an hour giving you a staggering 137 hours continuous running on a full FuelPAK 1000 litre bunded fuel tank.”

The Client said
