Temperatures forecast to reach 91F (33C) this week
The Met Office is poised to increase the official heat health warning to “level three”, the second highest level, amid forecasts that temperatures forecast to reach 91F (33C) this week.
It would trigger a string of emergency measures set down in the Government’s official heatwave plan.
Hospitals could be asked to set up emergency “cool rooms” and hand out cold drinks as part of a string of measures set to be activated as early as Tuesday as forecasters prepare to raise Britain’s heatwave alert.
There was also a warning that diseases such as swine flu could spread because of emergency ventilation measures being put in place.
The Met Office has issued a string of severe weather warnings for torrential downpours as soaring temperatures increase the risk of thunder storms throughout the week.
