Air Conditioning Hire Extreme Heat Safety Checklist

Extreme Temperature

“Most of us enjoy sunny weather, but extreme heat can seriously damage your health. During a heat wave, when temperatures stay really high day after day, it can sometimes be fatal.”

Heat kills by pushing the human body beyond its limits. In extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature.

Conditions that can induce heat-related illnesses include stagnant atmospheric conditions and poor air quality. Consequently, people living in urban areas may be at greater risk from the effects of a prolonged heat wave than those living in rural areas. Also, asphalt and concrete store heat longer and gradually release heat at night, which can produce higher night time temperatures known as the “urban heat island effect.”

What you should do if the weather is extremely hot:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • If air conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor of your home or office out of the sunshine.
  • Remember that electric fans do not cool; they just blow hot air around.
  • Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals.
  • Drink plenty of water regularly even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
Although beer and alcoholic beverages appear to satisfy thirst, they actually cause further body dehydration.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
  • Dress in loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
Lightweight, light-coloured clothing reflects heat and sunlight and helps maintain normal body temperature.
  • Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Avoid too much sunshine.
Sunburn slows the skin’s ability to cool itself. Use a sunscreen lotion with a high sun protection factor.
  • Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day.
  • Spend at least two hours per day in an air-conditioned place. The ideal temperature for people working in an office is expected to be 22.2°C
If your home or workplace is not air conditioned, consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, retail outlets and other community facilities. Circulating air in air conditioned buildings can cool the body by increasing the perspiration rate of evaporation.
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbours who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
  • Contact Watkins Hire on 0500 526 696 and arrange for an air conditioning hire system to be delivered and installed

“The UK government has identified high-risk groups who are vulnerable to the effects of heat and are physiologically unable to cool themselves efficiently, once temperatures rise above 26°C. Therefore, every care, nursing and residential home should be able to provide a room or area that maintains a temperature of 26°C or below.”
